Embracing a Skills-Ready Mindset
Skills has been a hot topic for a few years now, especially as technology has made finding and tracking skills easier than ever. As a result, we’re hearing quite a bit about the skills-based organization: the idea that a company will transform everything about the way it does business by rearranging itself around skills. But sometimes, as is the case here, the hype gets ahead of reality.

Course Overview
Centering skills is huge and important work for organizations, but it’s not the only way forward. Skills thinking is another tool in our toolbox.
In this Course, we’ll help you learn how to use skills thinking as a tool through a process we’re calling skills-readiness. It’s not about blowing up everything you’ve ever done and replacing it with skills-based programs. Skills-readiness is about learning the mindsets, perspectives, and understanding that underpin skills thinking—and bringing those concepts into your work.

Field Manuals
The Embracing a Skills-Ready Mindset course is made up of 5 Field Manuals (our version of an online module). Each one contains a variety of types of content and social exercises culminating in a mini-project, reflection, or debate. Each Field Manual will take you between 30-45 minutes to complete but you can jump on and off at your own pace, as often as you’d like. The deeper learning happens in the discussions with your fellow learners so be sure to check in on the conversations regularly.

Getting Ready for Skills
Skills-readiness is, first and foremost, about the way we see employees and think about work. When we look at our people through a skills lens instead of a jobs lens, we start to see them and their contributions in whole new ways. As you adopt this new mindset, you become more comfortable with key concepts and understand the core pathways that organizations use to become skills ready.
Laying the Foundation
The base layer of skills-readiness is about discovery: understanding what skills exist and who the key stakeholders are in any skills-forward project. We need to know what and who we have before we can transform anything! Here, too, you’ll take a close look at skills-readiness in one area of HR: Talent Acquisition.
Developing Skills
Building on our understanding of what we have at hand, we begin to categorize, analyze, and make predictions about where skills can take us. Theory begins to meet practice as we look at skills taxonomies, communicating skills-readiness to stakeholders outside of HR, and gaining buy-in. We look, too, at skills-readiness for Learning and Development.
Scaling Up Skills-Based Initiatives
Skills-readiness is the beginning. Bringing skills practices to life is the next step. This doesn’t mean a massive transformation; quite the opposite. Start small and scale smart. Bring skills-readiness practices across teams and projects, laying them in with other tools. And look at how Talent Development can help with scaling up skills projects.
Bringing Skills to Life
Skills projects today are powered by smart technologies that get smarter every day. Learn the keys to finding the right technology for whatever skills project you work on. And uncover what technology won’t do for you. Finally, take a deep dive into skills-practices across all of HR to uncover how you’ll bring your own skills readiness to your work.
